About Me
Dr Lungisani Mtimba was born and raised in Mount Frere. He matriculated from Makaula SSS in 2000 and thereafter obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2006 from Walter Sisulu University (WSU). He then worked at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital as a medical intern until 2008. In 2009, he completed community service at Grenville District Hospital. In 2010, he pursued his passion for General Surgery as a medical officer at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital (NMAH). From 2010 to 2014, he served as a medical registrar in General Surgery. In 2016, he obtained the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS) and a Master of Medicine (MMed), and became a consultant at NMAH.
In 2018, he attended Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal for vascular training and became a fellow, obtaining his qualification in 2020. He is currently the Head of the Vascular and Endovascular Unit at NMAH and a Senior Lecturer, training and teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has been involved in the Research Ethics team at Walter Sisulu University since 2016 and has reviewed more than five Master’s research papers as both a scientific and ethics reviewer. He has also marked four Master’s papers for the University and served as the coordinator of the 4th-year programme in General Surgery in 2016 and 2017.
He conducted medical outreaches at St Elizabeth Regional Hospital and Dr Malizo Mpehle Memorial Hospital, teaching medical officers from 2012 to 2018. He has attended workshops in Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, and New York.
He is passionate about learning and about developing others through skills and knowledge, with a focus on supporting Black children to excel independently and helping to close the gap created by the previous system through education.
